Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
