Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any major honors show draws close, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
