The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
